fuckyeahlatinamericanhistory:

Wifredo Lam, who was born 110 years ago today on December 8, 1902, was a Cuban artist of mixed Chinese, African, and Spanish ancestry whose work was deeply influenced by Afro-Cuban culture. He grew up in a thriving Afro-Cuban community in the island’s central Villa Clara province before traveling to Havana to study law, which he quickly abandoned before turning to art. Lam went to Europe to study painting in Spain, eventually making his way to Paris, where he met Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Joan Miró, Georges Braque, André Breton, and Claude Lévi-Strauss. He returned to Cuba at the outbreak of the second World War, and spent time in Haiti. It was then that his art began to incorporate the styles he had encountered in Europe with the Afro-Caribbean iconography of his childhood. Lam eventually returned to Europe in the 1950s and died in Paris at age 80.
